Also or especially the cultural sector is almost universally affected by the decisions and recommendations of the state governments regarding the Corona Pandemic. All major events have been banned until 31 August of this year. This decision hits our industry hard.
One of our planned projects, which we had really been looking forward to – the “Passionsspiele” in Oberammergau. The performance, which takes several hours, is considered one of the most famous Passion Plays in the world. The villagers of Oberammergau reenact the last five days of Jesus’ life. Only every 10 years the extraordinary spectacle takes place in the Oberammergau Passion Theatre and attracts international audiences to the municipality.
This year the games would have taken place for the 42nd time. Due to the Corona Pandemic and the decision of the district office of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the event planned from 16 May 2020 to 4 October 2020 was prohibited. The health of all visitors and participants is our top priority. The Passion is postponed to the year 2022.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International “Händel-Festspiele” Göttingen, of all things, the event, which was planned to take place from 20 May to 1 June 2020, has to be postponed. More than 10,000 people visit the annual music festival, which is considered the world’s oldest early music festival. Here too, the Foundation justifies its decision with the worldwide entry and exit bans as well as the potential danger for guests, artists and festival staff.
We deeply regret the cancellation of both events. We hope that the help developed by the federal and state governments to financially secure the freelance artists, all performers, musicians and contributors will take effect and we are already looking forward to the alternative dates next year and the year after next!
