After months of break due to Corona, all classical music lovers could rejoice last weekend. On July 9 and 10, 2021, the Odeonsplatz once again became Munich’s largest classical concert hall. In four concerts, a total of 8,000 listeners were able to be part of the 20th anniversary of “Klassik am Odeonsplatz” with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
As part of a pilot project, an audience of about 2,000 people was able to attend each concert. The results from this are to be used for future cultural events, which could thereby possibly take place on an even larger scale.
The event was opened on Friday, July 9, with two concerts by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lorenzo Viotti and pianist Yuja Wang. Works by Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Chabrier and Ravel were part of the programme.
On Saturday, July 10, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding and cellist Sol Gabetta performed works by Schumann, Debussy and Strawinsky.
The special setting, with the Feldherrenhalle as the orchestra stage and the neighbouring historic buildings, makes the Odeonsplatz a unique open-air event location. As has been the case for many years, our VIVACE electronic room acoustic system served as a central component in the sound concept designed by Neumann & Müller in cooperation with the Bavarian Radio. The orchestras on stage thus receive important acoustic support, and for the listeners on the Odeonsplatz, unimagined soundscapes open up, ranging from an enchanting pianissimo to an opulently intoxicating fortissimo from the two world-class orchestras.
